How long have you been teaching at Maxx Music?
Since 10 years ago, 1 tenth of a century.
When was the first time you realised you wanted to play music?
When I watching the film La Bamba, so probably 5/6 years old.
Favourite Gig you’ve played/ Favourite Gig you’ve been to?
My favourite gig I’ve played is a tough one; there’s been some amazing ones, and too many (hundreds, maybe a thousand) to think back through.
My favourite I’ve been to was Bobby Keys (Rolling Stones Sax player). [He was] doing a solo show at the basement, playing songs he’d played on by the Rolling Stones, George Harrison and Joe Cocker. [It was] very intimate and he unfortunately passed away only a few months later.
What’s your favourite piece of gear?
This is a can of worms asking the guy that owns 20 guitars, but probably either my Gretsch Black Falcon or my 1963 Gibson SG Junior. But then again, there’s the 1973 Telecaster or the Sparkle Jet; just too many!
Why do you think people should come and learn at Maxx Music?
To learn in a fun, encouraging environment from musicians (like myself) who are actually out there performing. And who are themselves still always looking to improve and learn. That and there’s often donuts around. Mainly come to Maxx to score donuts.
The editor would like to post a disclaimer at this moment to point out that unfortunately the donuts are normally eaten by the teachers before the students get there.
Thanks for the interview Funky!
